Painted-On Smiles

Arizona Wind

Copyright 2006.

I wrote this song for my sister Anna, who fell in love with Arizona many years ago and still longs to retire there someday.

But just as the song implies, i think we all can get caught up, especially in this city life, with chasing after things and the pursuit of passing things. The Day-in, Day-out struggle to make ends meet and just get by, let alone saving something aside for later, seems to trap us in a never-ending cycle.

God wants us to get back to Him, and one easy way to do that is to get alone with Him in this beautiful world He created for us to enjoy. And perhaps this wistful song will instill in your heart a longing to get closer to Him.

Lyrics

Verse1:
Sitting here this morning waiting for the light to change
This "Rush Hour" traffic about to drive me insane
The light is green but no one's going, so I have no choice
But to sit and try to listen to Your voice.

Chorus:
Oh, this city life is drowning out the sound of Your call
Through the cares of this world it's hard to hear it at all,
I'm so tired of this day to day pursuit of passing things
And the empty satisfaction that they bring.
Thinking back I try to recall when I last heard you speak,
Was it looking through the windshield at a Rocky Mountain Peak
Or Your laughter in the babble of a brook around the bend
Or Your whisper in the Arizona wind?

Verse2:
I remember when I first met You, it was at a church camp
Sitting round a campfire while my clothes were all damp.
And it felt just like a prison 'til the hour You set me free
When I heard about the price You paid for me!

Chorus:

Verse3:
Well, now the traffic's moving, so I'll have to say "So long."
And I hope You heard the longing here in my simple song,
I'll be packing up tonight, and when I speak with You again,
I'll get my handful of that Arizona Wind!
